Josh "JD" Driskill,
Echo Calls Pro Staff
Owner of Dirty Rice Outfitters, LLC
Josh Driskill, known as “JD”, was born and raised in southeast Missouri. As a well known duck hunter and caller. JD has duck hunted from the Mississippi to the St. Francis River, south to the Hornersville Swamp, and all the flooded rice and bean fields in between.
From a very young age, Beryl Driskill (JD's grandfather) introduced him to the art of hunting and making duck calls. He taught him how to make the calls himself and encouraged him to start waterfowl hunting. Since that time, JD has been interested in knowing all about ducks and how they operated. Most of what he learned was self-taught by watching and listening to the birds coming into roost and trying to mimic their sounds. But understanding how the birds worked and producing successful hunts wasn't enough. That's when the goal of winning a World Duck Calling Championship came to mind. In 2006, JD began participating in open duck calling competitions. That same year, he met Les Thompson, a fellow competitor. Since then, JD and Les have put their talents together and established Dirty Rice Outfitters, a successful guiding operation. JD has also had the privilege of working with Buck Gardner and now under the instruction of Rick Dunn (owner of Echo Calls) is still trying to achieve a world qualification.
His passion for hunting ducks grows more and more every year. For the past 3 years, JD has been guiding professionally, bringing to the table what a lot of people haven't seen. JD has established friendships with many farmers in the area, especially Mike Tidwell. Mike and JD have been able to be mobile and very productive, hunting over 3,000 acres of flooded rice and beans with some timber hunting as well.
JD resides in Gobler, MO with his family. His wife, Laura, is very supportive of his career and his son, Cannon, can't wait to hunt just like his daddy.
For JD, duck hunting is not a passion – it is a way of life.
Les Thompson,
Echo Calls Pro Staff
Les Thompson, called “Nooner”by most, is a well known duck caller and hunter raised in southeast Missouri. Growing up, he hunted the back water of the Mississippi River and the flooded fields of southeast Missouri. Now, he also hunts in northwestern Tennessee, northern Arkansas, and all over Missouri. He specializes in duck hunting and goose hunting as well.
Les was 8 years old when his interest for duck hunting first began. He saw his cousin bring back a limit of mallards and that's when he knew that duck hunting was in his blood. A short time after, he got a duck call with a Buck Gardner instructional calling tape. Listening to the tape and driving his parents crazy, he learned the basic steps of blowing a duck call. He then gathered a few decoys, his duck call, a bb gun, and set out to a flooded rice field nearby. After that day, he knew he was hooked for life.
Since then, Les has become an experienced duck hunter and a talented caller. At the age of 14, he entered his first duck calling contest at Reelfoot Lake. He made a goal to pursue competition duck calling and still competes today for his dream of winning the World Championship Duck Calling Contest. With his partnership in Dirty Rice Outfitters and being a pro staff hunter for Echo Calls, his dream is starting to take off.
Les is very versatile in all waterfowl areas and plays a big role here at Dirty Rice Outfitters. He is a guide as well as our research manager. He spends the off-season deer hunting, turkey hunting, and fishing. He resides in Concord, MO.
